They came, they coded, they conquered - The Tnooz THack Bangalore

Saturday 6th Dec 9am - The Tnooz THack event, hosted in Bangalore, kicked off with only 100 seats available. The event was FREE for anyone to compete and with over 250 developers registering, demand was high and seats were snapped up from those who registered first. The event was held at the Holiday IQ office in Bangalore and sponsored by Travelport.

Registration followed with introductions and details of the hack from the sponsors, and Gene Quinn and Martin Cowen of Tnooz. Four industry challenges to make travel more compelling, easier and fun were presented:

  • Travel wear: Create an innovation with wearable tech that tracks and shares travel
  • Wings, wheels & beyond: Build a travel experience to India or from India using three or more modes of transport to complete the journey
  • Personalization: cool, not creepy: Combine profile data, geo-location and social media to create a personalized travel experience
  • Think mobile, act local … Build a mobile application that supports and enhances the traveler’s journey - somewhere in India

Jan-Paul Ephithite, Senior Product Manager - Open Platform attended on behalf of Travelport and shared details of Travelport Universal API, offering developers free test access to use during the event. "It was a privilege to experience how India is taking its rightful place as a powerhouse of travel technology development. Innovative ideas, very skillful programmers and a very collaborative atmosphere were the ingredients that made this a memorable weekend", he said.

To shake things up, Travelport with support from their local distribution partner - InterGlobe Technologies, provided their own challenge two months prior to the hack, with free test access provided to those who registered. Based on Travelport’s Flex Explore solution, available through Travelport Universal API, developers were challenge to:

  • Create a standalone web-responsive, multiplatform, inspirational search IBE
  • Include a complete search, price and book workflow
  • Add the ability to include a Travelport Rooms and More hotel booking to the preferred flight option
  • Include an infrastructure for adding a local payment gateway
  • Provide the option to be utilized as an agent's primary IBE or as a compliment to their existing point-to-point IBE solution

Leading up to and during the event, Travelport was on hand to assist in the development of a solution using Travelport Universal API.

What do you get when you put 50 software hackers in a room for the weekend?

Ted Beatie, Partner Technical Specialist, Travelport, shares his experience in attending the San Francisco Tnooz THack.

Answer: Over 15 proofs-of-concept travel applications in under 30 hours! This past weekend, the third TNooz THack at the San Francisco airport was held. Travelport was an API sponsor, alongside other GDSs, Expedia, and Concur.

The event opened on Saturday morning with sponsor introductions and team selection, followed immediately by intense hacking. While airport regulations require the room close at 10pm, it didn't stop attendees from taking their hacking elsewhere – to coffee shops, nearby hotels, or other quiet corners of the airport.

Sunday morning saw sleep-deprived teams finish their coding and start work on their afternoon presentations. Among them were such hacks as Apple Watch integrations of flight information and boarding passes; local interests and activities based on Facebook profiles; a Chrome extension that displayed random inspirational travel destination photos paired with lowest airfare; an IBE that blended airfares and local tours; multi-modal travel search that included rental cars and local taxis; a Fitbit mashup with Concur for suggested running routes around hotels; and another watch integration for taking advantage of the off-ship time for cruises by suggesting itineraries during port stops.

Of particular interest was a small team from Seattle. With an innovative approach to "find the cheapest place to fly among a group of geographically dispersed travelers", they combined the air fares of all travelers and divided the total cost among each one, so those flying from the farthest location were not at a disadvantage. By utilizing Travelport Universal API's powerful low fare search function – Flex Explore – the project called 'Flock' won the $1000 Travelport prize and a valuable one year membership in the Travelport Developer Network. To find out more about Tnooz's THack San Francisco event click here.

Travelport is also sponsorship Tnooz THack Bangalore. In addition to the challenges set by Tnooz for their weekend competition, running 6th and 7th December, Travelport is setting our own unique extended challenge running from 7th October – 7th December. The challenge is to create, based on Travelport's Flex Explore solution, accessible via Travelport Universal API a standalone web-responsive, mulit-platform, inspirational Search IBE. Final hacks will be presented at the THack presentation event on 7th December. Click here to find out more about the Travelport Developer challenge in India.

"It's the perfect way to introduce developers to Travelport's technology, as well as the fun of competing against other developers" says Kevin May, Editor and Co-Founder of Tnooz.com. Anyone who wants to take part in the slightly, more frantic 24-hour hackathon in December is welcome. "We wish all attendees the best of luck and look forward to seeing the results of their efforts in Bangalore," adds Phil Donathy, Product Director, Travelport.

Travelport Universal API launches in India

Technology that will enable developers to build next generation travel applications and tools

Bangalore, India, 30th September 2014: Travelport, a leading Travel Commerce Platform providing distribution, technology, payment and other solutions for the $7 trillion global travel and tourism industry, last week launched its industry-leading Travelport Universal API (Application Programming Interface) to developers and customers in India.

Over the course of the week, Travelport delivered a number of workshops and presentations as part of the launch in both Delhi (Wednesday 24th September) and in Bangalore (Thursday 25th & Friday 26th September).

Now available in 100 countries, Travelport Universal API is the industry's first truly Universal API that aggregates content from its Travel Commerce Platform, including airfares, airline merchandising and ancillary content, hotels, car and rail content, and makes it available to developers creating their own travel applications through a single connection. The technology also enables developers to access and integrate multiple content sources by writing code to only one solution thereby allowing travel agencies to quickly and efficiently develop and differentiate their offering and enabling independent software developers to efficiently build their own travel applications.

As well as giving access to multiple sources of content through one connection, the Universal API also allows developers to access all the necessary business logic to make booking travel efficient such as search, pricing and profiling functionality as well as products such as Flex Explore, Travelport Merchandising Platform and Travelport Rooms and More.

Mr. Rabih Saab, Travelport's President and Managing Director, Africa, Middle East and South Asia, commented, "We are delighted to launch the Travelport Universal API in India and know that developers in this region see real value in this technology which helps them develop innovative, next generation new travel web sites, apps and other solutions quickly and efficiently."

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Anil Parashar, President and CEO, InterGlobe Technology Quotient Pvt. Ltd, added, "The launch of the Travelport Universal API in India has the potential to unlock innovative development in the region and is the only API of its kind that aggregates travel content from multiple sources and make it available through a single source."

A complete development resource center is accessible through a single dedicated developer website www.developer.travelport.com to support integration and implementation.

Introducing a new world of content

Travelport Universal API enables software specialists Vibe to build booking solutions that deliver an unprecedented level of content from around the globe – all via a single interface

Launched in 2007 as an off shoot of travel specialists P&P Associates, Vibe Software Ltd delivers both front and mid-off ice technology to online travel agencies, call centers, consolidators, retail agencies and travel management companies – all built using its standalone Vibe Engine platform.

As the company has grown with new clients, including household names such as Asda Travel, Emirates Holidays and London City Airport, so has its use of Travelport Universal API. Universal API aggregates a vast range of content from multiple data sources and makes it available through a single-source API connection. Vibe was one of the first in the UK to use the technology in response to a customer's need for a more comprehensive booking solution. The company has since built an effective and dynamic partnership with Travelport.

New client, new solution

"We won a new business contract with dnata – quite a large customer – and wanted to integrate content from both the Travelport Worldspan and Travelport Galileo GDS, to offer the best possible booking solution," explains Matthew Chapman, Vibe's Chief Technical Officer. "The single connection solution that Universal API provides was a great help in winning that business as it provided quick access to a wide range of content and functionality, allowing us to provide dnata and other customers with comprehensive booking solutions."

"We spoke to Travelport and were advised that Universal API was launching and it would be a major product," says Matthew. "So we began our integration of Universal API into our Internet booking engine (IBE). It removed the need to develop multiple booking solutions in order to incorporate different GDS technologies." Universal API provides a single connection for all Travelport's content offerings, significantly lowering the integration time and cost for each content source.

Universal API and Travelport's Open Platform architecture are designed to drive innovation, enabling third-party developers to access all core GDS technologies and a wealth of aggregated travel content, including ancillaries, air, hotel, rail and car. This not only saves development time – it also generates significant new revenue opportunities. For Vibe, Universal API meant the ability to create booking solutions more efficiently, while also incorporating a wider range of market-leading content and functionality into their IBE – all in a stable and secure programming environment.

"We use Travelport's flight content in our IBE solutions. There are also additional elements available through Universal API that we are planning to use."

"Working with Universal API and being able to offer connections to Travelport Worldspan and Travelport Galileo, along with the wide range of additional content that Travelport releases, has helped us retain and win customers," says Matthew. "As you can imagine with the latest technology, it's in constant development, and it's already developed so much. We look forward to continuing to evolve our IBE as new functionality is released as part of Universal API's future development."

One development that the Vibe team were immediately keen to integrate was the introduction of Ryanair content. The low-cost carrier began working with Travelport in March 2014 – the first time it has offered flights via a GDS supplier in more than a decade. "Through a Universal API project we were working on, we will be able to start offering Ryanair content to our corporate users," says Matthew. "That's a fantastic opportunity for us and for our customers."

Benefits of the Travelport Developer Network Vibe is part of the Travelport Developer Network, which means it receives technical and sales support from the Travelport team as well as the opportunity to promote its services at travelportdeveloperdirectory.com.

"Being part of the Travelport Developer Network has been a great opportunity for us," says Matthew. "I'd certainly recommend it. The sales, marketing and technical support has been great."

Vibe's relationship with Travelport has even inspired the development of a new, entry-level solution – Vibe Lite. This new IBE package offers reduced functionality, but the same emphasis on efficient, streamlined booking.

"Travelport needed a cost-effective booking solution for smaller travel agents," says Matthew. "So, working with Travelport, we determined requirements, how many agencies we could target and examined our cost base. As a direct result, we developed Vibe Lite."

"It doesn't provide the same depth of technology, but still offers a fully bookable online solution at a very good price," says Matthew. "We launched it in February 2014 and have had many inquiries. We're now offering this solution exclusively to agencies that work with Travelport, particularly in the Middle East. We also showcased it with Travelport at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai."

Vibe has always specialized in putting its customers in control via products built on its Vibe Engine platform. Now, through its Developer Network membership with Travelport and the use of Universal API, that control is backed by an ever-increasing range of content: making it easier than ever to build the ideal itinerary for every traveler.

Reflections on the Tnooz Big Data Hack

Chandra Jacobs, Product Manager Travelport Universal API

If you’re a travel developer, then you know the challenges, least of which is building a killer product that people will use and, gasp, even pay for. However, before you start building, you need to know the travel development products and APIs you have to work with. And that’s one of the reasons my team, the Data Slaves, hit the Tnooz Travel #BigDataHack at Hack/reduce in Cambridge, MA.

The kick off

To start with, we were given a deep dive into the datasets.

Travelport’s dataset was presented by Abdoul Sylla, Travelport Senior Product Director for data analytics. The data included flight shopping data with itineraries and pricing information that were part of the result served back to the customer by the travel agency (but not necessarily booked). The shopping process begins with customers specifying where they want to go (and when), and then Travelport executes the search and produces hundreds of itineraries between the city-pairs. Finally, the travel agency displays the results to its customers. If you’re a Travelport Universal API customer, you’ll know just how much data we serve up for you. If you don’t, take a peek at our Developer portal and request a 30-day trial access.

The technology

Over the weekend, we got to geek out with a cluster of 20 nodes with 32GB RAM, 4 CPU cores, 300GB disk space, a 10 node elastic search cluster, and 1 Redis instance.

The problem

We decided to solve the problem of when to book travel based on price, availability, class, capacity and other factors. The customer use case was:

"Thanksgiving is coming up. How many days in advance should I book travel to get the best personalized flight bundle?"

This didn’t just mean finding the lowest price. It also meant finding the best seat on the plane, a desired cabin, or having an empty seat next to you.

The solution

To solve this, we used three of the four datasets:

  • Travelport for searches (queries)
  • Amadeus for responses (results)
  • ARC for bookings (prices).

We arbitrarily linked these data sets together in time and date, assuming that, in real life, it would be easy to obtain matching data sets. Normalizing the data took some time because we had to massage the datasets to match up specific attributes and scale them in the right way. Once we’d normalized the sets, we set them up in Elastic Search so that they could be queried quickly. After that, we had just enough time to do some quick trend analysis and graphical displays, which you can see in our prezi. And you can find out about the winning teams here.

The bottom line

Get to a hackathon. It’s an opportunity to share your passion, learn new skills and build something cool with like-minded others. The best part is that you can test new travel APIs,and products and you’ll gain input, feedback and help from travel experts. Most teams disperse their ideas after a hackathon, it doesn’t mean yours has to.

We look forward to letting you peak behind the curtain of a few of our products at a hackathon soon.

Benefits far beyond technology

Membership of the Travelport Developer Network has enabled Travelio to both harness the power of the Travelport Universal API and to establish valuable business connections.

"I can divide the benefits of being part of the Travelport Developer Network into two important parts: the technology is great, and the sales and networking support really helps us too."

Filip Lepus, General Manager, Travelio

Based in the Romanian capital Bucharest, Travelio specializes in software solutions for small and mid-sized travel agencies. Offering Internet Booking Engine (IBE) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solutions in its Travelio range, Travelio’s focus has always been – and remains firmly – on technology.

Travelio was one of the first companies in Romania to build solutions using Travelport’s Universal API. Designed to drive innovative solutions through a single interface, Universal API enables third-party developers to access multiple GDS (global distribution system) technologies and a wealth of associated travel content. With a single- source API, Travelio’s developers built IBE solutions that offer enhanced functionality and richer content such as air, hotel, car and rail to its agency customers.

Alongside this technological advantage, Filip Lepus, Travelio’s General Manager, highlights the significant sales and relationship-building opportunities generated by its membership in the Travelport Developer Network. Both are specialisms that fall outside the company’s development focus. "I knew that we would be part of a group of similar developers," says Filip. "But I’ve now realized there is much more to the Developer Network than that."

Implementing a more complex search facility

Established in 2004, Travelio began focusing solely on travel technology in 2007. At that time, Filip recalls, many agencies in Romania were still invoicing on paper and using a very basic degree of technology. But as agencies began to seek more advanced solutions, Filip contacted Travelport seeking integration support. "We started discussions with Travelport focused on incorporating complex searches in our internet booking engines," says Filip. "We wanted a technology that would enable us to offer customers richer flight, hotel and baggage information, all in one search result, and to deliver that content through automated online booking systems."

The decision to move to Universal API

Travelport Universal API is creating new opportunities for developers: aggregating content from multiple sources, and enabling access via one API connection. This single point of contact allows developers to focus on developing, rather than on managing and maintaining numerous interfaces.

"We realized the advantage of developing using Universal API when we first created an IBE bringing in content from Travelport Galileo," says Filip. "We’d already developed a similar booking solution using content from Travelport Worldspan, and by using Universal API, we could simply pull Travelport Galileo into that solution. It was fast and easy, and the new solution was ready to deploy within two weeks."

"It showed us the greatest part of Universal API – which is also in its name: it’s universal. You can choose different core technologies without having to change your coding. You are on the same platform in terms of external connectivity, and this makes development much more efficient."

Working with Universal API is also simplified, Filip believes, by the online technical support available to developers. "When a new colleague joins, we can provide the links to Travelport’s support area and be confident that the documentation will leave them in good shape."

The Travelport Developer Network

Membership of the Travelport Developer Network gives access to a wide range of support. "I can divide the benefits of being part of the Travelport Developer Network into two important parts: the technology is great, and the sales and networking support really helps us too," says Filip.

Being part of the Network has enabled Travelio to participate in Travelport events in Riga, Barcelona and Bucharest, and to present Travelio solutions to potential clients identified by Travelport. "At times, Travelport is even more active in terms of getting opportunities than we are – perhaps because we are mainly programmers," Filip says. "When a travel agency is looking for a solution, they often reach out directly to Travelport; in turn, Travelport provides multiple recommendations, which gives us an opportunity to sell our solutions. We’re also introduced to other developers, which means we can discuss ideas and share any challenges we are facing."

Travelio introduced Universal API to create more complex online booking systems – but the relationship with Travelport has since generated benefits that reach far beyond technology.

Travelport Developer Tools and Resource Update!

Migration of Classic API Customer Facing Content to Travelport Developer Site

Travelport have improved our Classic API customer support collateral on our Developer website by providing a streamlined user experience for the Classic APIs and putting a fresh face on the existing Classic API content.

In the past, customers who required documentation and downloads for Travelport Galileo Classic APIs were required to find this content on the AIS website (ais.galileo.com). To make it simpler and save time for our customers, Classic API content for Travelport Galileo products is now available on the Travelport Developer site, providing both Travelport Universal APITM and Classic API content in one convenient location.

The new Travelport Galileo Resource Center page includes links to the GWS Sample Site and the GWS Help system and also provides the ability to filter by product:

  • Travelport Galileo Web Services (GWS)
  • XML Select
  • EDIFACT Select
  • APF XML Interface
  • Travelport Galileo Desktop Customization
  • XML API Desktop
  • We will continue to enhance and update our available support materials. Updates will be posted as they become available.

Travelport Developer Tools and Resource Update!

You’ve been telling us what you want and we’ve delivered! New and updated XML Samples are now available for Travelport Universal API Release 6.0.

A project long in the making, Travelport has created maintainable XML samples for Travelport Universal API. Both Travelport customers and Travelport internal teams have requested up-to-date sample content to assist with development and customer problem-solving.

Replacing the existing offering of less than 70 sample request and responses, more than 200 full XML request and response samples have been created for transactional workflows. These samples allow customers to see a multitude of XML messages that can be sent in Universal API requests and received in responses.

Samples have been organized into workflows for each sample type: Air, Air Merchandising, Hotel, Vehicle, and Universal Record. A new numbering scheme makes it quick to tell which samples belong to the same workflow. The XML Sample offering will be updated with each release and will also grow as new functionality is added to Universal API. See the samples in the Universal API Help.

The investment in maintainable sample content is a direct response to both internal and customer feedback, and we’d love to hear what you think. Click here or email us at DeveloperNetwork@travelport.com.

Travelport Marketplace Set for Debut at PhoCusWright:
    One-Stop Shop for Innovation

HOLLYWOOD, FL, Nov. 14, 2013 – Travelport, a leading distribution services and e-commerce provider for the global travel industry, today announces the beta launch of Travelport Marketplace, an online retail site designed for Travelport’s customers to browse, discover and access innovative products built both by Travelport and partner developers who are members of the Travelport Developer Network (TDN).

“The Marketplace is part of the ongoing evolution of the Travelport Developer Network and the commitment we have to the third party developer community,” said Chris Zando, vice president, Global Partnerships, Alliances & Regional Product Management.

Travelport Marketplace provides TDN members with a marketplace to promote and sell their products and services to 67,000 Travelport-connected agencies globally. A key component of Travelport’s Open Platform strategy, Travelport Marketplace is designed to help developers build innovative products that work in harmony with Travelport technologies and add value to Travelport-connected travel agencies.

In the future, agencies will find not only companion apps for the Company’s leading agency desktops; Travelport Smartpoint and Travelport Universal Desktop but also a place to discover suitable partners for a broad range of agency IT tools designed to provide improved customer service and create new revenue streams – from internet booking engine providers to mobile app developers.

According to Phil Donathy, product director, Developer Tools, Travelport, “We want developers to know about Marketplace. We’re asking them to provide input and test-drive our platform. In line with our open ethos, we're sharing a live working product so the developer community can help shape the direction in advance of a commercial launch to Travelport agency customers in 2014.”

"Travelport's Marketplace is the ultimate distribution channel for the travel industry,”
said Michael Somoza, CEO, GottaPark, Inc. “To be able to directly access all of Travelport partners with a single set of integrations is truly amazing. Becoming a member of the Travelport Developer Network has provided a large boost to our company. Not only have they enabled us to connect to their partners via software, but they have also opened countless doors for us through personal connections and introductions. We are proud to be allied with such a well-respected leader of the travel industry."

In tandem with Marketplace, Travelport is also launching a Software Development Kit (SDK) for Travelport Smartpoint which will allow developers to build plug-ins that integrate with the desktop used by the majority of Travelport agencies. Donathy added, “Today we're in alpha testing for the Travelport Smartpoint SDK with ten customers, four agencies, and six members of TDN. At PhoCusWright, we’ll be looking for development partners for a beta program that will be kicked off early next year.

Tommi Holmgren, chief product officer of Cabforce, one of the earliest adopters of Smartpoint SDK says, "Travelport Smartpoint SDK and the Marketplace offer us an excellent opportunity to distribute our taxi and airport transfer content to travel agencies and to fuel our global growth. With our app, agencies can sell door-to-door trips to their passengers with just couple of clicks, making Smartpoint an extremely powerful point-of-sale that helps drive higher revenue per trip."

“The SDK Console is amazing – such a huge bonus to have this,” according to developer Paul Toomey, Navitas Solutions. “I have been using it to test various aspects before committing them to my plug-ins. This is invaluable!”

New Technology Evolves Art of Travel Search with Inspiring Options Designed to Help Lookers Become Bookers

HOLLYWOOD,FL, Nov. 19, 2013 - Today priceline.com, a leader in mobile travel and part of The Priceline Group (NASDAQ: PCLN), announced a new beta version of its iPad app that brings travel exploration, research and booking capabilities together in one app. The latest innovation in mobile travel app technology, priceline.com’s new Explore functionality unhinges travel aspirations and empowers consumers to uncover new popular priceline.com destinations around the world, while comparing prices, reducing the need to research and book travel at different times in different places. For the first time, priceline.com travelers can search for flights and access real-time pricing without defining a specific destination.

Powered by Travelport Flex Explore search technology, Explore enhances priceline.com’s existing iPad app, which has been a featured Travel app in Apple’s iTunes store. The application presents an easy-to-navigate graphical map of the world and an expansive range of inspirational search capabilities to narrow down the ideal destination and desired travel experience. Beginning this week with priceline.com’ Explore functionality, travelers can:

    • Access flight availability and pricing in real-time from any origin airport to a variety of destinations with one simple search, reducing the need to conduct multiple destination searches

    • Narrow flight options and reveal additional airports and flights by circling an area on the map

    • Leverage a budget filter to narrow flight results and destinations by preferred price

“Our iPad customers are in the early stages of travel planning, often booking further in advance for longer lengths of stay compared to smartphone users. In fact, iPad users are almost three times more likely to book 10+ days in advance than iPhone users,” said John Caine, Chief Product Officer of priceline.com. “We’ve designed this feature for iPad users by making it easier to research multiple destinations, and we are delighted to help travelers who are just beginning the exploration process.”

“We’re committed to helping our valued customer priceline.com inspire their travelers and delighted to work with them to provide consumers with great search functionality,” said Kurt Ekert, chief commercial officer, Travelport. “Travelport initiatives are all founded on one underlying principle: to provide the most informed travel choice. dnata Signs Up for Travelport's Industry-Leading Universal API

Travelport, the business services provider to the global travel industry, today announces that it has signed a ground-breaking agreement with leading travel management provider dnata to utilise the industry-leading Travelport Universal API technology for the first time in the Middle East.

Available in selected countries, Travelport Universal API (Application Programming Interface) is a GDS industry first, offering the ability to aggregate content and travel-related services from multiple sources through a single connection, leading to greater up-sell and cross-sell opportunities for travel retailers and suppliers.

Dubai-headquartered dnata has become the first travel retailer in the region to gain access to Travelport's Universal API, which provides a single connection to additional air, hotel and rail content not available on the core GDS. dnata has already begun leveraging Travelport Universal API to support its growing portfolio, including its recently expanded online business.

As an open platform, Travelport Universal API works side-by-side with existing APIs, allowing dnata to build customised applications that will enhance its online capabilities. The technology will also help them maximize their IT investments by supplementing existing content feeds and functionality as they transition to the new content tools and resources.

"By removing the need to manage and maintain multiple API connections, Universal API is helping us better manage our IT expenditure whilst streamlining our travel supply chain," says Iain Andrew, Divisional Senior-Vice President, dnata Travel. "Travelport has helped us simplify our travel distribution by reducing associated costs and complexities."

"dnata now has access to next-generation technology that represents a reengineering of Travelport's infrastructure," said Rabih Saab, president and managing director, Middle East and Africa, Travelport. "Universal API underpins the GDS technology of the future, allowing for easy access to a world of content and functionality in a very simplistic and efficient way."

Travelport Universal API is a key interface and central to the underlying architecture of Travelport's next-generation technologies, including Travelport Universal Desktop. Travelport Universal Desktop is the ground-breaking booking solution that unifies travel selling and merchandising onto a single platform.

Travelport shows off Facebook flight search and booking system prototype

As part of the preparation for the November 2011 launch of its Developer Network, Travelport asked an external programmer to see what could done with the data provided through its API when thrown in Facebook.

The result is the e-volve app, a platform where users can search and book flights for any airline via the Travelport GDS feed through the ePricing service coming into the Universal API.

Travelport certifies Ypsilon.Net for Universal API

First certification in Germany for a new interface – Universal API offers numerous possibilities – common PNR to the easy administration

Ypsilon.Net has become the first company in Germany to be given certification for the new, revolutionary interface Travelport Universal API

Ypsilon.Net has become the first company in Germany to be given certification for the new, revolutionary interface Travelport Universal API. Following the successful conclusion of the corresponding programming, which the Frankfurt software company completed with the support of Travelport, Ypsilon.Net is in a position as of now to make use of Universal API for booking engines, not only in B2B, but also in the B2C area as well as replacing its own interface Air XML API with Universal API.

"Ypsilon.Net has clearly recognized the numerous advantages of Universal API", explains Jürgen Witte, Travelport's Regional Managing Director for Germany and Switzerland. "We would, therefore, like to heartily congratulate the Ypsilon.Net team on becoming the first which we have been able to award the certification for the interface".

Patrick Coulomb, Director Sales & Marketing of Ypsilon.Net: "We are delighted that we are now able to make use of Universal API and, as a result, are in a position to offer our customers additional and more varied content. For our powerful booking engines and individual customer solutions, the interface is thus an ideal complement".

Travelport Universal API is the first GDS interface in the travel industry worldwide which is in a position to retrieve offers and services - ranging from classical GDS content (flights, hotels, cars) via low-cost carriers and directly linked railway companies, right through merchandizing, additional hotel databases and further services - and to combine them with each other. As a result, the IT infrastructures can be considerably slimmed down and processes simplified. Universal API automatically directs inquiries to all relevant data sources and bundles the entire feedback into a single reply. In addition, bookings which are running via Universal Desktop are bundled into a joint PNR - irrespective of which sources the individual services originate from.

GTM embrace visual first with Travelport Universal Desktop

Nicola Workman, Employee Communications and Engagement Manager at Travelport, interviewed Scott Pawley, Managing Director of Global Travel Management (GTM) - the first UK test customer to gain live access to Travelport Universal Desktop.

What made you decide to become a beta customer/development partner for Travelport's Universal Desktop?

When we first heard of the product it sounded so exciting; very new, very ground-breaking and we wanted to be in at stage one. It needed the input of a travel agent to make use of the tools and find out how it worked at a grass roots level so we wanted to be part of that and get in first.

What are your favourite features of Travelport Universal Desktop and why?

There are so many; the ability to multi-task; how you can get the equivalent of nine quotes with one key stroke (previously that would have been nine) so I love the speed and simplicity.

Would you recommend Travelport and Universal Desktop to other agents?

    Most definitely

How have you found working with the Travelport team? How do they respond to your needs as a customer?

They've been great and that was one of the reasons we wanted to be using it first, because we knew we'd get the extra attention and care necessary. The Travelport team are in our office more often than not and we really consider them members of our team.

What do you see as the major benefits to your business from using Travelport Universal Desktop and what impact will this have with your customers?

Customer-wise information is gained faster, it's more direct and we can work outside our boundaries; it's limitless. As an employer, I can now look at a prospective employee's skillset as 'travel trained' rather than 'one GDS trained'. Although not losing the skill of what to sell and how to sell it, you don't have to cross-train someone from one GDS to another to answer a question on availability or provide a fare quote because that's now a part of the workflow availability. That's one of the most exciting parts - the workflow. No two clients are the same so it's nice to go to a client and actually prove the point by saying, if you have a workflow situation which needs to be sorted around specific requirements, e.g. no car or hotel in the package, we can work around that request, because there are no limits. There are great possibilities with Travelport Universal Desktop and being first gives us the edge against our competitors.

What has been the reaction of your agents using the product?

For those using it, there is great excitement. We're rolling it out on a block by block basis, rather than trying to get everyone on board at once. As with everything, there's an apprehension element of the unknown, however our experience shows that once our agents have got the hang of the system, can see the speed with which they can work and how efficient it is - they're sold!!

One word to describe Universal Desktop?

    Revolutionary!

Thank you to Scott for taking the time to talk to us. To read the GTM press release, please click here.

"We are delighted Rearden Commerce recognizes the value of our Universal API - it very much underpins the next generation of our technology and allows for easy access to a world of content and functionality in a very simplistic and efficient way."

Travelport Universal API is the GDS industry's first application programming interface (API) that offers the power and capacity to aggregate travel content and related services from multiple sources through a single interface. The new technology enables developers to access extensive content in a faster and more time efficient manner by coding to one single solution instead of multiple APIs.

HRG Signs Up For Travelport's Universal API Technology

Langley, UK - 21 March 2011: Travelport, the business services provider to the global travel industry, has today confirmed that Hogg Robinson Group (HRG), the world class corporate travel services company, has signed a global agreement for use of its industry-leading Universal API technology.

Launched last September, the Travelport Universal API is a GDS industry first offering travel agency customers the ability to aggregate content and travel related services from multiple sources through one single connection. As part of the new agreement, HRG will gain access to additional content from low cost carriers and high speed rail providers as a complement to core GDS content.

The solution, which was designed by Travelport to greatly reduce the time and money its customers were spending on IT, negates the need for HRG to manage and maintain multiple API connections to its new Super Platform architecture.

"Travelport's API support team worked closely with the HRG team during both the planning and implementation stages of this initiative and we're very pleased with how smoothly it has all gone," said Bill Brindle, Group Distribution and Technology Director at HRG.

"By coding to one single solution instead of multiple APIs, HRG has quickly gained easy access to extensive new content for its customers. We can continue to book this additional content in our normal workflow process so it's a win win situation for both HRG and our customers."

Sandra McLeod, Senior Vice President, Global Accounts & Strategic Corporate Development for Travelport added: "We are delighted HRG recognized the value of our Universal API - it very much underpins the next generation of our technology and allows for easy access to a world of content and functionality in a very simplistic and efficient way."
